Binge-eating disorder: signs and support in Brussels

Understand binge episodes with loss of control, how they differ from bulimia, and the first steps towards specialist support.

What is binge-eating disorder?

Binge-eating disorder involves recurrent binge episodes with loss of control and marked distress, without regular compensatory behaviours after the episodes. It is not defined by weight or a lack of willpower.

Signs that deserve assessment

  • Eating an unusually large amount in a short time and feeling unable to stop.
  • Eating rapidly, without hunger, or until uncomfortably full.
  • Eating alone or secretly, followed by shame, guilt, or distress.
  • Alternating binges with repeated restriction or dieting and persistent food preoccupation.

Binge-eating disorder or bulimia?

Both may involve binge episodes with loss of control. Binge-eating disorder does not include regular compensatory behaviours after episodes, unlike bulimia. Professional assessment is still needed.

Understand

Who should I contact in Brussels?

  • A GP to assess health and coordinate care.
  • An eating-disorder psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • A specialised dietitian to address the restriction–binge cycle without blame-based dieting.
  • For ages 0–23, a treating physician can assess access to the Belgian pathway.

What is the role of dietetic care?

Work focuses on understanding triggers, progressively regularising eating, and reducing restriction that may maintain binge episodes. It forms part of coordinated medical and psychological care.

When is urgent help needed?

Severe faintness, chest pain, acute psychological distress, suicidal thoughts, or immediate danger require urgent help. In Belgium, call 112 in an immediate emergency.

Frequently asked questions about binge eating

Is binge-eating disorder simply overeating?

No. It involves recurrent episodes with loss of control and distress. An occasional large meal does not define a disorder.

Should I start a diet to stop binge episodes?

Restriction can sometimes maintain the binge cycle. An individual strategy should be built with eating-disorder professionals.

Can I seek help at any weight?

Yes. Distress, loss of control, and impact on daily life warrant assessment regardless of weight.
